After hosting exchange students from China, Japan, and Spain three years in a row, then teaching one summer for the EF Home Stays program, I was hired to write chapters for two of the program workbooks used in their classroom curriculum. I was given a topic and general guidelines for what types of activities and information to include, then allowed my creative freedom to design lessons for my two target groups. The workbooks are intended to offer foreign students insight into the United States and the American lifestyle. The lesson plan involves providing practice for their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The program asked that the authors supply sample images to support the activities and a full script for the listening exercise that they would then record with voice actors and provide with the published copy of the workbooks.
